CR-914 Ready-to-Race
The CR takes the first time builder about 20-30 hours to assemble - not bad when you consider the end result. But to many, that 30 hours is on and off again, spread over a long period of time. Sometimes, the boat never gets done!
I build boats for two kinds of owners, those that have little time for pleasure and would rather spend it sailing, and those that do not find kit building enjoyable.
Even though I charge a lot of money for what I do, believe me, if I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it. Broken down to an hourly wage ..... well, let's just say, I am not doing it just for the money.
Note:
This boat is very strictly regulated by a one-design rule. Neither I, nor anyone else, can make any modifications that would change the performance of the boat (boat speed). But I can do those special things that make the boat easier to handle and more durable in the long run, so you can concentrate on the thrill of racing.
I build only one boat at a time in order to pay particular attention to all the details. Following is a list of some of the upgrades that I do on RTR boats only.
Upgrades to the Ready-to-Race CR-914
(If buying the Ultimate kit, materials and instructions are included for all of the following)
Upgrades using materials in kit.
- Keel Trunk - Install a thickened epoxy fillet around the keel trunk (inside the boat) to strengthen this critical structure against damage from grounding the keel.
- Adjuster rings on spars - replace plastic rings with string rings - easier to adjust, less fouling with other boats, and far more durable.
- Replace Cleats - replace all cleats with better adjustment controls - little cleats are a pain. They grab and hold everything EXCEPT what you want them to!
- Fairlead - The jib sheet can foul on winches and other nearby fittings if it is not captive in a deck fairlead - so I add one that does the job.
- Sail Lacing - Mainsail quik-laced to mast - replaces metal rings. Easier to adjust, rig/unrig, and doesn't mark mast.
- Rudder Post - File flat spot to help tiller set-screw seat properly and prevent the rudder from slipping out of the boat accidentally.
- Tethered bow bung - Installation - keeps the bow drain plug from getting away from you when you are in a hurry.
- Adjust & Test RC system - The entire control system is checked and adjusted so that the rudder centers properly and that the sheeting controls are optimized.
- Rig Tuning - Your boat is completely pre-tuned in the shop. Plus, you receive detailed written instructions for continued tuning for best race performance.
- Race Certified - Your boat is guaranteed to comply with all class regulations. I sit on the class national advisory board and, with 4 others, review rule challenges as they are encountered.
Upgrades requiring extra materials (included in package price)
- Hull Finish - Each hull is painted to the owner's choice of enamel color coat. Before shipping, the color coat is finished to 1500 grit and then compound buffed to a high luster.
- Toe rails on foredeck - replace plastic toe rails with wood (bamboo) because they are more durable - and look better too.
- Quik Rig/Unrig system - Rig and unrig boat in 10 minutes - This is a slick arrangement with quick release main & jib sheets, jib tack, jib halyard and forestay, backstay, and all shrouds. It also includes quik disconnect mainsail, gooseneck and boom vang. All clips, snaps, and rods included.
- Standing Rigging - All standing rigging string is colored black before installation. This is permanent color and will not run. All running rigging remains white.
- Topping Lift - Provide and install an ingenious topping lift on the jib club boom. A must for light sir sailing.
- Waterproof - Seal servos, switch, and receiver against bilge water intrusion - just that much more protection for your electronics below.
- Antenna - internal rather than external installation - superior reception, looks better, less windage.
- Chain plates & deck eyes - These fittings must not be glued, only screwed in case they ever break. I use a special caulk to seal these fittings against leaks.
- Receiver - Install the receiver in a specially modified main electronics platform for easier access and ease of changing crystals. Receiver is also enclosed in a balloon to give extra water protection.
- Sail numbers permanently applied to mainsail with indelible ink.
- CR Pack 2002 rechargeable battery system insures easy battery management, and top performance from your R/C system. This add-on is the finishing touch for top performance and reliability of your electronic system.

- Packed for shipping - Your finished boat is carefully packed for shipping with the hull in a cloth sleeve. Complete assembly from this packing will take only 20 minutes.
